Having a counseling degree and being a leadership trainer, I could never have learned on my own what happens in a shift, the terminology, the organization’s design nor what happens at the kitchen table. Having a fire services chief officer as a friend, I have sat at the kitchen table, have toured the fire house, and seen what is packed in compartments on a fire truck, but Silent Mayday provides a much deeper look into their world. If you are a counselor, minister, trainer or partner of someone in fire services, doing your own “scene size up” by analyzing their situation for threats that can be potentially harmful will provide a perspective to understand their world. Understanding that PTSD can go on for years and empathizing with them can create more conversation, but don’t pressure them to talk and don’t act so formal. The “do’s and don’ts” for clinicians is the best page in the book! This book is a MUST for clinicians. Read it, keep it close by as a reference. Ryan Gallik, retired firefighter and safety expert, knows first hand how it all works and I thank him for writing this valuable, practical book.
